Two Internet options for verifying that employee Social Security Numbers match with employee names are now available, Social Security Commissioner Jo Ann Barnhart announced June 2 at the Social Security Administration's Payroll Reporting Conference, held in Washington D.C.
According to the SSA Web site, employers are now able to verify up to 10 names and SSNs (per screen) online and receive immediate results. In addition, employers can upload batch files of up to 250,000 names and SSNs through the site, and can expect to receive results the next government business day. "This option is ideal if you want to verify an entire payroll data base or if you hire a large number of workers at a time," SSA notes on the Web site.
Employers and third-party providers are cautioned, however, that the Social Security Number Verification Service (SSNVS) "can only be used to verify current or former employees and only for wage reporting (Form W-2) purposes." The service is not to be used for verifying the SSNs of potential new hires or contractors.
